Bernie Rickinson holding Rightweight book at event

Launch of Rightweight book
Dr Paul Thompson, Rector of the Royal College of Art, joined Institute of Materials CEO, Dr Bernie Rickinson (pictured above), in welcoming RCA alumni to the launch of Rightweight – a new book to help designers develop suitably weighted products.

The book was the result of two knowledge exchange seminars developed by InnovationRCA. The RCA is a founder partner of the Materials and Design Exchange (MaDE) group.

MaDE, an initiative of the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), was set up to build links and strengthen collaborations between designers and scientists.

Rightweight was compiled by RCA alumnus and MaDE design-mentor Geoff Hollington and includes contributions from a number of experts including Dr Sarah Teasley of the RCA's History of Design programme and Charles Spence, Professor of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University.

Published by the Materials KTN, this small book is intended to help us consider product weight - rightweight - as a vital component in design practice and materials science.
