Group discussing project at the Gabions workshop

London Olympics 2012 programme

InnovationRCA’s London Olympics 2012 programme is based on a partnership with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and aims to position the College as a lead institution for art and design in relation to the Games and their legacy.

An inter-disciplinary workshop held in February 2008 invited 50 postgraduate artist and designers from the RCA, the University of East London and London Metropolitan University to invent new uses for gabions – the steel baskets that will hold reclaimed rubble from the Olympic Parkland as support for bridges and riverbanks. The results can be seen here.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) ran a public consultation art workshop at Hackney Wick Community Centre for local residents. The aim of the day was to look at potential creative ideas for the London 2012 Gardens. The workshop was facilitated by lecturers and graduates from the RCA and the University of East London.
