Gabions Workshop for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

13 February 2008 marked the first opportunity for postgraduate students from the Royal College of Art, University of East London and London Metropolitan University to apply their inventiveness to the London 2012 Olympics from an art and design perspective. The brief invited 50 artists and designers to reinvent the 'gabion' structures that will be used extensively on the Olympic site in Stratford, East London.

A gabion is a large (usually steel mesh) basket structure filled with broken stone or rubble, in part excavated from the site where the gabion will be used. Gabions are usually used as structural devices as an alternative to walls for concrete, for example in retaining river banks. However, they can be used in many different situations, both structurally and decoratively.

Organised by InnovationRCA at the Royal College of Art, in collaboration with the Olympic Delivery Authority.
